What I have found with years of experience…

Finding a qualified therapist to treat autism can be challenging, as many mental health professionals lack specialized training in neurodiversity-affirming care. Traditional therapy models often prioritize neurotypical communication and behavioral expectations, which may not align with the needs of autistic individuals. Additionally, misconceptions about autism can lead to ineffective or even harmful approaches, such as discouraging stimming or focusing solely on social conformity rather than authentic self-expression. Long waitlists, limited availability of providers with expertise in autism and trauma, and financial barriers further complicate access to appropriate care. Families and individuals must often navigate a complex system to find a therapist who understands autism beyond surface-level stereotypes and can provide truly supportive, individualized treatment.
